Awards - OCPA and OASPA

OCPA and OASPA have a proud tradition of honoring individuals and programs in Ohio colleges and universities who make a difference in the lives of students, faculty, staff and alumni. We are pleased to offer a variety of awards encompassing many aspects of the Student Affairs profession. All awards are open to individuals in Ohio higher education institutions. Nominees do not have to be a member of OCPA and/or OASPA to receive an award from either group.

Please take the time to nominate your friends and colleagues! The OCPA/OASPA Awards deadline is Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Recipients of the awards will be announced at the annual Awards Ceremony during the OCPA/OASPA Annual Conference.

THE PHILLIP A. TRIPP DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
The Phillip A. Tripp Distinguished Service Award is presented annually by OCPA to a student affairs professional in recognition of distinguished service to the field of Student Affairs. The purpose of the award is to recognize seasoned members of the profession. The selection criteria for the Phillip A. Tripp Distinguished Service Award is as follows:

  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of professional involvement in the field of student affairs.
  • Significant and outstanding contributions to the profession through administration, writing, teaching, research and service to professional organizations.

The committee may select up to two (2) recipients in a given year. However, the award is not to be given out of necessity as it is designated as a special award. The nominee need not be a member of OCPA or have spent his or her entire career in Ohio. However, the nominee must have made a significant contribution to the profession in the state of Ohio during the span of his/her professional career.

Nominations should include the following materials:

  • Letter of nomination
  • Current vita of nominee
  • Letter of recommendation from someone other than the nominator
  • Other supporting documents as appropriate

THE GERALD L. SADDLEMIRE MENTOR AWARD
The Gerald L. Saddlemire Mentor Award is presented annually by OCPA. Gerald L. Saddlemire was an effective administrator, a true scholar and educator, and a mentor who accepted each person as a unique individual and believed that the ability and potential of each professional is Student Affair’s greatest asset. This Gerald L. Saddlemire Mentor Award is presented to the Student Affairs professional who embodies and advances the true spirit and ideals of Dr. Gerald L. Saddlemire . The selection criteria for the Gerald L. Saddlemire Mentor Award is as follows:

  • Serves as a mentor and role model to graduate and/or undergraduate students, and other student affairs professionals
  • Known as a supportive and educational administrator
  • He/she has made significant contributions to the ideals of the student affairs profession

Although the recipient need not have been working in Ohio during his/her career, the nominee should have made significant contributions in the state of Ohio.

  • Supporting letters of nomination from an undergraduate student and/or graduate student/assistant and staff members mentored by the nominee

THE MARK G. NOFFSINGER NEW PROFESSIONAL AWARD
The Mark G. Noffsinger New Professional Award is presented annually by OCPA. Mark G. Noffsinger was one of the founders of OCPA. As president-elect in 1979-80, Mark was one of several who initiated the New Professionals Conference which was held regionally in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Berea. Mark served as President in 1980-81 of OCPA. The selection criteria for the Mark G. Noffsinger New Professional Award is as follows:

  • A maximum of three (3) years experience in the student affairs professio
  • Serves as a role model to students and professionals
  • Demonstrates creativity and innovation in the field with the potential for continued success

  • Supporting letters of nomination from students, graduate students/assistants, faculty and staff members
  • Any other supporting documents that serve as evidence of the nominee’s qualifications for the award

THE FAYETTA PAULSEN ACCOMPLISHED LEADER AWARD
The Fayetta M. Paulsen Accomplished Leader Award is presented annually by OCPA. Fayetta M. Paulsen was a founder of OCPA and first president in 1976-77. Fayetta is the only person in Ohio who has been president of all three state personnel associations- OAWDAC, OASPA and OCPA. The Fayetta M. Paulsen Accomplished Leader Award is presented by OCPA to a Student Affairs professional who has exhibited outstanding leadership in meeting the varied and emerging needs of today’s students. The individual has made innovative contributions to the field of Student Affairs and to his/her institution.
The selection criteria for the Fayetta Paulsen Award is as follows:

  • He/she has made significant contributions to the field of Student Affairs and to the institution
  • Acts as a role model to students and professionals
  • Demonstrates leadership and innovation in the field by meeting student’s needs

Nominations should include the following:

  • Letter of nomination
  • Current resume of nominee
  • Supporting letters of nomination from students, graduate students/assistants, faculty and professional staff
  • Any other supporting documents attesting to the nominee’s qualifications for the award

THE INNOVATIVE PROGRAM AWARD
The Innovative Program Award is presented annually by OCPA to a student affairs professional who has initiated a new program or unique approach to a challenging situation and/or specific campus concern or need. It is the goal of OCPA to recognize innovative and effective approaches that help university officials meet the changing needs of students on college and university campuses. It is also an opportunity to highlight good administrative and other practices and share different approaches to meeting student needs with colleagues at other institutions.
The selection criteria for the Innovative Program Award is as follows:

  • Description of the challenging situation and/or specific campus concern or need
  • Explanation of how the program or policy addressed the identified concern or need
  • Evaluation of the policy or program including suggestions as to how the policy or program could be modified to become more effective
  • Description of how the policy or program could be implemented on other campuses

Nominations should include the following:

  • Cover letter from the submitting nominator
  • Information about the individuals responsible for the innovative program or policy
  • Other supporting documents detailing the creation and implementation of the program

Only one nomination will be considered from each college, university and/or regional campus. The nominated policy or program should have occurred within the 2003-06 academic years.

THE ROBERT F. RODGERS GRADUATE STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Robert F. Rodgers Graduate Student of the Year Award is presented annually by OCPA. As graduate students become more actively involved in creating the future direction of Student Affairs, OCPA has committed to recognizing their professional achievements. OCPA presents The Graduate Student of the Year Award in recognition of the dedication and unlimited energies of a full-time Ohio graduate student, masters or doctoral candidate, in the field of student affairs, college/student personnel or a related field.
The selection criteria for the Robert F. Rodgers Graduate Student of the Year Award is as follows:

  • Full-time masters or doctoral graduate student in Ohio
  • Evidence of dedication and unlimited energies to the student affairs, college/student personnel or related field

Nominations should include the following:

  1. Letter of nomination
  2. Current resume of nominee
  3. Supporting letter of nomination from undergraduate students, graduate students, supervisor(s), faculty and staff
  4. Any other supporting documents that identify the nominee’s qualifications for this award

There is a $500 monetary prize included with this award.

THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT LEADER AWARD
The Undergraduate Student Leader Award is presented annually by OCPA. This award is presented to an undergraduate student leader who is enrolled in an Ohio higher education institution and has demonstrated leadership, contributed to student affairs on his/her campus, and has a desire to begin a professional career in Student Affairs.
The selection criteria for the Undergraduate Student Leader Award is as follows:

  • Student enrolled in an Ohio higher education institution
  • Evidence of leadership and/or involvement in co-curricular opportunities and experiences
  • Committed to fostering leadership that is inclusive and directed toward a common good
  • Contribution to the area of student affairs
  • Evidence of his/her desire to begin a professional career in the field

Nominations should include:

  • Letter of nomination
  • Current resume of nominee
  • Supporting letters of nomination from graduate/undergraduate students, advisors, faculty and professional staff members

Any other documents supporting the nominee’s qualifications for the award

THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY AWARD
The Cultural Diversity Award is presented annually by OCPA to an individual and/or campus community that has successfully developed innovative courses, programs and/or services that promote multicultural understanding and appreciation across the curriculum and/or campus. The award is given to honor individual and/or community leadership in developing creative and effective programs that address and/or improve cultural diversity issues in higher education.

The selection criteria for the Cultural Diversity Award is as follows:

  • Description of the specific campus, community or organizational diversity need or issue
  • Explanation of how the person, program or service contributed to addressing student and/or campus diversity need(s) or issue(s):
    • Provide information regarding the individual and/or campus community efforts to promote understanding and responsiveness to cultural diversity issues
    • Demonstrate how the person or program encouraged student, faculty, staff, alumni and/or community involvement
    • Describe how the person or program enhanced the appreciation of cultural diversity as a way of life on the college or university campus
    • Provide evidence of sustained activities and programs that promote an atmosphere of inclusiveness for all students

Nominations should include the following:

  • Current resume or vita of the nominee, if applicable
  • Other supporting documents demonstrating and detailing the nominee’s contributions

OCPA FACULTY AWARD
The OCPA Faculty Award is presented by OCPA to a faculty member in recognition of exemplary performance and contribution to the field of Student Affairs both in and outside of the classroom. Faculty provide graduate training that prepares individuals for leadership in shaping the future of higher education. Faculty teach students how to apply knowledge and to advance the role of higher education in supporting the public good, and improving institutional practice.

The OCPA Faculty Award will be given to the individual who:

  • A full-time faculty member in any Ohio College and/or University who possess comprehensive knowledge about higher education as an enterprise and demonstrates a combination of academic knowledge with individual action
  • Demonstrated scholarly research and improvement of instruction in higher education and student affairs.
  • Significant and outstanding contributions to the profession through administration, writing, teaching, research and service to professional organizations.
  • Mentors and prepares students for research and self-directed learning
  • He/she has made significant contributions to the ideals of the student affairs profession.

THE GERALD L. SADDLEMIRE AWARD

  • Demonstrated consistent involvement at the state, regional, and/or national level
  • Contributed to the profession through the development and mentoring of new professionals
  • Exemplified a commitment to the students on his or her campus

THE WILLIAM NESTOR PRESIDENTIAL AWARD
Modeled after the NASPA President’s award, The William Nestor Presidential Award is presented annually to an Ohio college or university president who, while serving as president, has actively enhanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting student affairs staff and programs during their presidency.
Nominees must have a record of:

  • Direct involvement in enhancing the quality of student life on campus
  • Demonstrable attempts to involve students and student life staff in governing the institution
  • Verifiable contributions to the profession which have an impact beyond an individual campus

Nomination Process:

  • Letter of nomination
  • No more than three letters of support describing the nominee's achievements
  • Current résumé of nominee

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Awarded annually by OASPA, the Distinguished Service Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to creating a campus environment that promotes student learning, growth, and development.
Nominees must have a record of:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of higher education and student affairs
  • Contribution to his/her campus through the development and mentoring of new professionals and students
  • Nominee has developed and/or implemented programs focused on student needs and development that have enhanced the campus vision and mission

Nomination Process:

  • Letter of nomination highlighting the nominee’s accomplishments
  • Up to two letters of support
  • Current résumé of nominee
  • Other supporting materials (if needed)

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO LITERATURE/RESEARCH AWARD
Modeled after NASPA’s Outstanding Contribution to Literature or Research Award, nominees for this award must demonstrate professional commitment to student affairs and higher education administration. Their literature and/or research will be judged on how applicable it is to regional and state issues, and how applicable it is to the daily work of student affairs practitioners.

Nomination Process:

  • Letter of nomination
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae of nominee
  • Up to five letters of support describing the nominee’s achievements
  • Other supporting materials (if needed)
