OCPA/OASPA Conference 2006
"Ohio's Conference for Student Affairs"

Hitting the Bull's Eye: Are We on Target with Students?

February 1-3 (Wednesday through Friday), 2006
Worthington, Ohio

(just outside Columbus, Ohio)
PreConferences on Wednesday, Feb. 1
Conference on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 2 and 3

Ohio’s conference for student affairs is just around the corner, which means that it is TIME TO REGISTER! OCPA and OASPA have once again has kept the cost of registration to a minimum in an effort to maximize participation for this excellent learning opportunity. Because this conference has gained in popularity you are encouraged to register before the January 6 deadline to ensure you are “on Target” to attend.

As usual, there will be an array of exemplary programs, an inspiring keynote address, terrific networking opportunities, and of course, good food and plenty of fun.

New to this year’s conference is a Silent Auction that will raise money toward conference expenses and the Diamond Honoree fundraising campaign for Susan Eklund-Leen, OCPA's only two-term President who served during 1984-1985 and 1985-1986.

First-Time Attendees will have special opportunities at the conference, including a reception on Thursday morning and a chance to network during optional “Night on the Town” activities.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ann Groves Lloyd, Assistant Dean for Assessment and Development, University of Wisconsin- Madison and currently the ACPA State and International Division Director. Throughout her travels and work with ACPA and assessment, she will provide interesting insight to the question posed by the conference theme by highlighting materials from the recent joint publication of ACPA and NASPA, Learning Reconsidered: A Campus-Wide Focus on the Student Experience.

Three dynamic pre-conference workshops will be presented on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 1:

  • Educating Ourselves Through Program Assessment: Continuously Improving our Service to Students - Our keynote speaker has agreed to offer a pre-conference assessment workshop to a limited number of participants. Attendees will explore a self-evaluation of their assessment practices, develop tools for evaluating “where you’re at” regarding assessment in your unit/department, and identify strengths upon which to build and aspects to improve or enhance. This workshop will provide a catalyst for important conversation and action on the topic of assessment.
  • Diversity Training – The annual diversity training series will feature a number of break out sessions on topics such as Exploring Religion Beyond Christianity, Cultural Diversity Programming: Where Do I Begin?, Asian Americans: The Myth of the Model Minority, Diversity and the Student Newspaper, and Reflections of GLBTQ Students on Campus – watch the OCPA and OASPA website for updates and broader descriptions of these sessions.
  • Higher Education Funding Issues in the State of Ohio - Expanding on the success of the 2005 conference presentation, “The Ohio Board of Regents: A Partner in Success,” this pre-conference workshop will expand on the partnership between the Ohio Board of Regents, public and private colleges and universities in the State of Ohio, and student affairs professionals. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of the Board of Regents in higher education and student affairs, current trends and initiatives of the Ohio Board of Regents, and possible future collaborations. Issues will also be addressed from the perspective of a public and private institution.

Hotel arrangements can be made at http://www.radisson.com/worthingtonoh Again, this venue has provided reasonable conference room rate of $74 a night. Please use the block code "OCPA" or mention this code when reserving your room to obtain the conference rate.

At the left, you will find the tentative schedule for the conference as well as the registration form. Checks can be made out to OCPA or credit card information will be accepted through a Paypal.com account. Information about the conference will continue to be updated at the OCPA and OASPA websites www.ocpaonline.org and www.bgsu.edu/organizations/oaspa/. Colleagues can download the registration form beginning November 22nd from these websites.

Accepted program proposals will be posted to the web in early December and also more information about Resume Review and Resource Room sign ups, Graduate Student Case Study Competition, and reservations for “Night on the Town” options.

Again, the deadline for conference registration is Friday, January 6th. Should you have additional questions about the conference, we welcome you to contact us directly.
