Ohio’s
conference for student affairs is just around the corner, which
means that it is TIME TO REGISTER! OCPA and OASPA have once again
has kept the cost of registration to a minimum in an effort to maximize
participation for this excellent learning opportunity. Because this
conference has gained in popularity you are encouraged to register
before the January 12 deadline!
As usual, there will be an array of exemplary programs, an inspiring
keynote address, terrific networking opportunities, and of course,
good food and plenty of fun.
Back
by popular demand to this year’s conference is a Silent
Auction! Bring those checkbooks and of course think
about items from your home region or campus that you can donate.
The Silent Auction will support the First Conference Service
Project! We are collecting books for a new Student
Affairs library and the University of the West Indies through their
ACPA regional organization. Please bring new or gently used books,
professional journals and articles to donate to future professionals
and scholars at the University of West Indies.
First-Time
Attendees will have special opportunities at the
conference, including a meeting on Thursday morning, opportunities
to have their resume reviewed, and participate in great sessions.
The
keynote speaker will
be Dr. Joan Hirt, Associate Professor of Higher Education and Student
Affairs, at Virginia Tech. She has over 20 years of experience as
a university administrator and faculty member. She started her career
in the California State University system before moving to the University
of Arizona where she worked as an Associate Dean of Students. Since
moving to her current faculty position, she has authored numerous
journal articles and book chapters, has presented over 50 programs
at national and regional conferences on student affairs and higher
education, and has consulted with over a dozen campuses and corporations.
Two of her primary areas of research are the supervision of new
professionals and also the impact of institutional type on student
affairs practice.
Two
dynamic pre-conference workshops
will be presented on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 31:
- Diversity
Workshop
– The Diversity Pre-Conference for OCPA this year will focus
on Diversity Competence in Student Affairs. Participants will
have the opportunity to reflect upon a wide array of diversity
issues and to learn about how to enhance their competence with
diversity issues in a holistic manner. Break-out sessions will
include topics on oppression and privilege, class issues, and
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, inter-sexed, queer and questioning
issues.

On
behalf of the conference planning committee and the Board for both
OASPA and OCPA – we are excited that you will be joining us
in Worthington, Ohio next week for Ohio’s Conference for Student
Affairs!
Service Project
This year’s conference is featuring a service project to benefit
a new Student Affairs library at the University of the West Indies.
Please bring new or gently used books, journals, and any other professional
literature that would benefit new student affairs scholars. There
will be collection boxes available throughout the conference.
Silent Auction
Back by popular demand – the Silent Auction! Don’t forget
those checkbooks as you can bid on items both for your personal
benefit and your institution! Also, we are still accepting items,
so please bring an item or two to donate. All proceeds will benefit
the service project for the conference. Support a worthy cause by
both donating and bidding at the Silent Auction! For more information,

Volunteer
Implementing a conference of this magnitude requires assistance
from countless individuals! We need your help too! If you would
like to volunteer during the conference, contact Nicole Hoefle at
shoefle@bgnet.bgsu.edu. We need individuals to introduce sessions
and distribute evaluations, assist with the silent auction and registration.
Consider offering your assistance to ensure another successful conference!
Pre and Post Conference Workshops
OASPA and OCPA are committed to offering affordable and relevant
professional development to all student affairs scholars and practitioners.
If you have not yet signed up to attend a pre-conference or post-conference
workshop – consider doing so. We can take your registration
up until this Thursday, January 25. Pre-conference workshops are
being offered on the topics of Diversity or Legal Issues and cost
$25 (which includes materials and a lunch), and the post-conference
is on Job Searching and costs $10 (which includes materials and
a refreshment break). Full information is available on the OCPA

Conference Hotel Block
This year’s conference has been such a success that our hotel
block filled quickly! Rooms have been added at the conference rate
of $78. Contact the Radisson directly to lock in the conference
rate. If you have already made your reservation, you can call back
to ensure you get the correct rate (and to make sure your room is
counted in our block). The hotel block closes on January 25.
