Keynote Speaker: Dr. Carolyn Bershad

OCPA and OASPA are please to host Dr. Carolyn Bershad, Associate Director for Clinical Services in the Counseling and Student Development Center at Northern Illinois University, as this year's keynote speaker. Dr. Bershad will address the experience of NIU’s Counseling and Student Development Center on and after the campus shooting of February 14, 2008.  She will relate her experiences as a Student Affairs administrator and psychologist, and discuss the kinds of policies and procedures that allowed for an immediate and ongoing mental health response to this crisis.

Dr. Bershad started working at NIU’s Counseling and Student Development Center in August 2007 as the Associate Director for Clinical Services.  Prior to that time she served as Staff Psychologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago for 6 years.  She has also worked in various capacities in Student and Academic Affairs at the University at Buffalo, Penn State University, the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  She has masters’ degrees in Asian Studies and Anthropology, in addition to her doctorate in Counseling Psychology.  Dr. Bershad has been an active member of ACPA since 1999, is a member of the Commission for Counseling and Psychological Services, and is currently serving a second term on the Commission’s directorate.

The 2008 Robert A. Dubick Case Study Competition is a great opportunity for professional development and networking at the Annual OCPA/OASPA Conference!

The Case Study Competition will take place on Thursday, January 29th  from 1:00-5:00 p.m.  Working in a team of two graduate students (either self-selected or assigned interested individuals), you will appraise a case concerning crisis on a college campus and apply your knowledge of student affairs to propose a logical solution. Each team will be allocated 10 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for questions from the judges. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

Registration for the competition can be indicated on the OCPA/OASPA Conference registration form. Please be sure to specify your teammate.  If you do not have a teammate, assignments can be made based on availability. Entries must be received by Friday, January 9th.

“Cultivating an Inclusive Climate:  Building Campus -Wide Partnerships”

All student affairs practitioners can agree that student success depends on the university commitment to creating innovative organizational structures, policies, programs, and practices that contribute to the development of an inclusive and engaging student and campus culture.  As student affairs practitioners, we often find ourselves asking, “Whose job is it anyway to make our campuses welcoming and inclusive?"

Exploring diversity and ways to cultivate an inclusive campus climate has powerful implications for student affairs practitioners.  Understanding diversity models and how to manage crisis affecting diverse populations is an important first step toward engaging diverse and inclusive learning communities.  The Diversity pre-conference program is designed to engage a dialogue on best practices and models to effect change on college and university campuses and beyond.

Who is the target audience for the Diversity Pre-Conference?

  • Academic Advising, Academic Support Services, Campus Ministries, International Education, Residence Life, Public Safety, Student Activities practitioners who are interested in creating inclusive and engaging campus environments
  • Graduate students and young professionals interested in careers in diversity and inclusion
  • Mid-level professionals looking for diversity-focused career advancement paths
  • Multicultural and Diversity Practitioners
  • Student Affairs practitioners with interests in diversity and cross-campus collaboration

"Staying Alive – Tools to Successfully Navigate the Political Seas of Higher Education"

In the “business of higher education” as there is more competition for resources, it is important for professionals to keep their political radar in good working order. This session will teach both new and seasoned professionals the “tricks of the trade” as we tread the institutional political waters, which can often be rough.  We will share war stories, problem-solve and develop strategies to protect ourselves and our constituents in precarious economic times.
